Why is maternity photography important?

It really is true that a woman is never more glowing and radiant then when she has a ripe belly full of life.  Thank goodness for Demi Moore, Annie Liebowitz, and the cover of Vanity Fair. This moment really changed the way we see pregnant women.  It showed that we can celebrate this beautiful changing body and not to hide under big dresses or tops. It taught many women to embrace this moment and capture it as life soon will never be the same.  If I had a dollar for every time I heard a woman say, I wish that I would have had maternity photographs done while I was pregnant” … or .. “Gosh, I wish they even offered that type of photography back when I was having babies”….or…”Oh I never thought I wanted to do that, and now I regret it so much!”..well needless to say, I would sure have a lot of dollars!

This is a fleeting moment that you can make stand still with photographs. Years from now, these photographs will bring back those moments of the joy and excitement that you felt with the anticipation of the day your baby would arrive.

Some tips to get the most out of your pregnancy session:

  • Schedule your session to take place between 32-36 weeks of pregnancy
  • Wear loose clothing the day of your session so there are not lines from your clothing on your skin.
  • Treat yourself to a professional make-up and hair appointment the morning of your session.
  • Bring a variety of clothing from jeans with no maternity band, to button tops that open in the front and/or a belly band that can be used as a top.
  • Relax and don’t be afraid to show off a little skin.

Some tips in finding the right photographer for you:

  • The photographer should have extensive experience in pregnancy photography in order to know how to pose a pregnant woman in the most flattering way possible.
  • Find a photographer whose work that you absolutely love and that you can feel comfortable with to share this most intimate and special time of your life.

It's hysterical to me that I stopped here to read this soon after I made the comment that I'm sad I missed out on beautiful maternity photos done by a professional photographer. It's one of my life's regrets - having tasteful maternity photos that mark that very fleeting time in a woman's life. Thank you for spreading the word!!

Really great advice! I am one that regrets not having these portraits taken - I have maybe ONE snapshot of me while pregnant and that is it! It is such a beautiful moment in a woman's life journey and definitely should be captured.

Well said! Every woman needs to not just document this time, but make the investment in custom art that she deserves! This is truly priceless.

I could not agree more! I finally had maternity images taken when I was on my 3rd pregnancy and I treasure those images so so much. It was such a special and celebratory time for our family waiting for Etain to arrive. Great article!

This is so so true. I have five children and not until my last did I do maternity portraits. In fact, Ruthi David did them for me. They are among my most treasured things in my life now. Doing them for myself made me wish more mom's would do it for them too. You just can't ever go back in time for something like this and it should be captured. Awesome point on the hair and makeup!!

Such fantastic advice! I have so many clients who, while hesitant at first, say they are their maternity photos are their favorite by far. As a momma of 2 I can honestly say that the pics of my pregnant with my babes are some of my most cherished possessions. And if I ever have another I will take even more!!!

Oh I can relate. I remember my first pregnancy seemed like it would never end and then suddenly, the moment you give birth, not only are you a new mother, you are no longer pregnant. I definitely felt some strong nostalgia for that first pregnancy and all the feelings that came with it...wish I had photos.

Thanks for the great article!! We missed out on doing maternity portraits with my wife's first pregnancy, and we're making up for it now. Really is such an incredible time to capture... Lastly, your image is stunning, and totally reflects the beauty of pregnancy!!

I received the opportunity to photograph this adorable family hanging out in their home recently.  Last time I was there, there was just one little girl who now is a big sister! It was so much fun lounging around and playing with their kids. I love photographing people in their homes just hanging out and being them. Here is a little peek at this oh so cute little family!
